2. CHANGES TO OUR EGROUP
We have made a few changes to our yahoo egroup settings in order to prevent its misuse by unscrupulous people. We have found that a number of completely unrelated links and files have been recently added to our egroup. From now on all additions to links, files, photos etc. must submitted to the moderator <firstname.lastname@example.org> for insertion.
3. NEW 8 OR 9 YARD SARIS FOR SALE
Chantal came back from India with a small stock of 8 and 9 yard saris. Half of those she brought back are already sold, but she is setting up a way to order saris directly from India. This will make it easy to purchase all kinds of saris of all lengths. Please also note the new URL of the web page:
4. WHY NO STITCH?
Peter, a new IDC member, has sent us this e-mail:
"While 'draped clothing must be of rectangular unsewn cloth' is a limitation. Will you accept some 'cut and sewn' portions of draped clothing?"
We would like to answer by saying that the purpose of IDC is to promote draped clothing , not any kind of clothing. There are unlimited numbers of studies, web sites, etc. on general and stitched clothing but very little exists on draped clothes. In summary , our goal here is not to be unlimited but to limit ourselves to the defence of an endangered form of costume.
5. NEW WEB LINKS
This month, we have links in several languages...
An interesting site about turbans:
Many photos are of finished wraps, but no "how-to." (may have problems loading the photos.)
A complete web site about African women's turbans in French:
Adire African Textiles: http://www.adire.clara.net
Explores the textile traditions of Africa and sells African textiles.
THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOU WHO INDICATED THESE WEB SITES!
6. PERSONAL NOTE FROM CHANTAL:
I am back from India where Peter and I had a Hindu wedding ceremony (to see: http://www.shakti.clara.net/pers.html). That was a lot of work and unfortunately I haven't had time for much else... Happily, Barjons Books from Montana (USA) has taken over the US sales of my book, which freed much of my time and makes my book very easy to obtain in the USA (just call 800 788 4318).
Meanwhile things have been very quiet, except that I received many requests for saris, and I only could bring so many from India (it's heavy!!!). To fulfil this growing demand, I have created a new web site: http://www.beautifulsaris.co.uk
Right now it just replicates the page where IDC members can sell saris, but soon it will become a resource with all kind of info about saris, saris for sale by IDC members as before, and saris-on-demand, which can be ordered from India (I especially plan to be able to fulfil special requests such as rare length saris and wedding saris). Keep an eye on this page in the next few weeks if you are interested in saris.
2002 has been a very slow year, with many projects unfortunately not coming through. Let's hope that 2003 will be a better year for draped clothes. I will have more time and energy to devote to the promotion of IDC, and would welcome more input and assistance from some of you.
