2. SARI EXHIBITION IN LONDON

In a very exciting development, the Commonwealth Institute (on Kensington High Street) has agreed to include the exhibition “The Indian sari: draping bodies, revealing lives” in their 2003 program. I first contacted them in 1996 (never loose hope!), but at that time their policy was to have only art exhibitions. Last year they decided to shift to cultural and educational exhibitions, so they asked me to send a fresh proposal, which was eventually approved. The exact date is not set yet, but I hope it will be in the later part of the year.
This is very good news for us, and gives us the chance of a high-profile event to raise awareness about draped clothes and IDC. It will be an opportunity to invite educational institutions to visit the exhibition and have lectures.
It is still very early, but lots need to be done, and ideas shared, to make the most of this event. If you live in England, especially London and wish to help, please contact me at:

3. MORE HEADDRESSES

We have received several pictures of draped “hijab”, as well as documents about this type of headdress.
These pictures were sent by Hokhmah Masoud, who wrote:
“Please feel free to take a look at my site: http://www.oasisdancecompany.com for some photos of costuming done by our in-house artisans. There are plenty more costumes of interest to your organization that have not yet been posted. In particular some costumes on ebay feature different draped styles of Middle-eastern/ Muslim modest head covering.

Here are the pictures:

We also have new URLs in our web library. Please check them if you are interested.

4. GETTING MARRIED IN SARIS
Adam Burke, an IDC member, has sent us this great email:

“I am getting married in two weeks, and my fiancee and I have decided that most of the women at the ceremony will wear sarees! We returned from India a couple of months ago, and we brought back around 25 fancy cotton sarees from Rishikesh. My mother, my sisters, and my fiancee's friends are all excited about dressing "Indian." I will forward the IDC Library link to them to help ease their sari draping fears! They are learning well, but it's not so easy for a beginner, as you must know. Thanks for the valuable resource!”

Dear Adam, CONGRATULATIONS! For your wedding (we wish you both great happiness) and for promoting saris!

5. A PERSONAL NOTE FROM CHANTAL:

Well, God knows that I have waited to see my exhibition finally be planned in London. This shows that persistence and hope can be rewarded... Now we have to make the most of this opportunity.
Please keep on contributing and share your ideas.

Best wishes!
